Equity for Non-Binary Athletes

We stand for inclusivity, transparency, and fairness; we expect the same from the Philadelphia Marathon!

Did you know that the Philadelphia Marathon doesn’t offer a specific prize pool for non-binary athletes at the elite level? To be eligible for prize money, elite non-binary athletes must choose to compete in either the men's or women's category, essentially misgendering themselves for the opportunity.

Over the last year, local advocates met with the Philadelphia Marathon leadership, urging them to take the right steps for inclusivity. While they have made some progress, similar to other events, they have flat-out refused to take this crucial step of inclusion for the elite athletes. This is contrary to other major races in our city — the Philly 10K, the Broad Street Run, and Philadelphia Distance Run — all of which award and celebrate elite non-binary athletes who compete in their events. This practice also goes against the city’s Fair Practices Ordinance, which includes protections for gender identity.

We stand against the Philadelphia Marathon’s policy and we urge you to do the same. Let the Philadelphia Marathon know that non-binary elite runners deserve the chance to compete as their authentic selves and earn equal prize money. It's time we move past outdated policies that do more harm than good.
